Manuka gets the headlines. Leatherwood gets the results. While Manuka’s bioactivity is measured by its MGO and UMF rating, Leatherwood carries its own suite of rare bioactive compounds — including 4-Methoxymandelic acid, a phenolic compound unique to Leatherwood that contributes to its antimicrobial and antioxidant profile in ways science is still catching up to.

Here’s what Manuka doesn’t have: Tasmania. Australia’s island state remains completely varroa-free — meaning the bees aren’t treated with the miticides that quietly contaminate honeys from the mainland and beyond. No varroa. No chemical intervention. Just hives doing what they’ve done for millennia, in a forest that hasn’t changed.

Manuka is mono-floral by design and grown at commercial scale. Leatherwood blooms only in remote old-growth rainforest — it cannot be farmed. Every jar is a product of a wild place. That’s not marketing. That’s ecology.

Leatherwood honey is graded under the TAR (Tasmanian Authentic Rating) system — a rigorous certification framework specific to Tasmanian Leatherwood that verifies botanical origin, purity, and bioactive integrity. Think of it as Manuka’s UMF, but for a honey that earns its rating from one of the most protected floral sources in the Southern Hemisphere.
